Wizard Organizations

Picture
In the mundane world, there is a saying about impossible tasks, "It's about as easy as trying to herd cats!"  In worlds with wizards, "It's about as easy as getting wizards to work together.  Unfortunately, the same skills and abilities that lead to great wizards; also almost always leads to someone who 'does not play well with others'.  Thus, wizard organizations are a rather difficult concept....
Solitary Wizards
First, many wizards do not like to work with other wizards.  They find it much easier to work with non-wizards (as long as they render proper respect and don't try to understand true magic!)  After all, the companions with the sharp swords or the healing spells do come in useful.  These solitary wizards will trade services with other solitary wizards; such as training in exchange for running a little "errand".  Apprentices are sometimes tolerated.  However, this type of wizard is most happy exploring magic in splendid solitude or questing for long forgotten lore.  They are likely to be very independently minded, extremely curious, and constantly striving to perfect their craft and to know everything about the arcane (Happiness is an entire library of spell books!).
